hile working at my mother’s
boutique, I was met with the
challenge of helping a 24 yr. old
breast cancer survivor select a
dress to hide her scars. Feeling her
frustration, I realized that gowns
are either too matronly or too
revealing for breast cancer
survivors. Without any sketching or
sewing experience I entered fashion
design school and founded The Pink
Pledge, advocating for change in the
fashion industry while raising money
for the cure. Famous designers and
celebrities who have joined the
Pledge include Tony Bowls, Paula
Chang, Maya Angelou, Peggy Fleming,
Liz Taylor and Al Pacino.
As Susan G. Komen celebrates its 25th
anniversary millions of survivors
are the youngest in history. The
world embraces the timeless beauty
of a woman and this is why my
platform is so important. I want
every survivor to feel beautiful and
whole. This is my pledge and I have
dedicated my life to it.
